In August, 2017, I had the opportunity to attend the Amnesty International Student Media Summit in London.
One of the most valuable talks was on investigative skills, including the effective use of search engine commands, FOIs and data. Guy Basnett delivered the talk – who was also involved in the production one of my favourite pieces of investigative journalism of 2017 on the secret Tory call centre.
A talk from Jessica Elgot, political reporter at The Guardian, was a very interesting (and inspiring) insight into life as a reporter as Westminster. There were a lot of aspects to it I never realised – such as the role of WhatsApp as a modern lobby. I got the chance to briefly chat to Jessica after her talk about whether she preferred writing news or politics, and how she got to working in Westminster.
I also arranged for a 1-1 interview with newly elected NUS president Shakira Martin, where we spoke about her first months in the position.
